English law

This was quite interesting AND funny!!

English donkey law branded an ass

LONDON (AFP) - An ancient law banning an English town from holding a market because it is less than "a donkey ride" away from one in a rival town, was branded an ass Tuesday.
The centuries-old law is used by residents of South Shields near Newcastle to prevent their neighbours in North Shields -- just on the other side of the Tyne river -- from setting up a market.
"We have been trying for a number of years to get around this," said Maggie Richardson of the North Shields Chamber of Trade and Commerce, which wants to set up a weekly market.
"But every time we have approached South Tyneside Council, they say they were given a market charter some time in the 1200 region by king John, so that no one can set up a market within a day's donkey ride.
"It is a bizarre situation ... It's not funny, it's pathetic. The law definitely is an ass. We need a market because they bring vibrancy to the town centre."
South Tyneside Council, like the proverbial donkey, won't budge. "South Shields market is both vibrant and popular, and attracts thousands of visitors to the borough every year," said a spokesman.
"It is of great importance to South Tyneside and, as its owner, South Tyneside Council has a duty to protect it from rivals."
The donkey ride distance is commonly understood to mean six and two-thirds miles (10.7 kilometres) -- how far a trader was deemed to be able to travel from home, sell for eight hours, then return in a single day.

Why do people behave so badly?

click on the article for a larger, readable view...
This is a very good question I've asked myself a couple of times whilst travelling on the tube....there are of course a couple of good reasons we all know. Lack of social skills the very first reason, how I reason of course. More importantly, the "can't be bothered" (or is it the "can't be bovvered") attitude...by parents not to raise their children properly, as well as adults having the attitude...it's like a snowball, it gathers snow while rolling down the hill ....or like a cycle...it never stops...somewhere someone should take responsibility to break the cycle...My question I want to put forward to the Government, not that I'm the one to tell them what to do! but just something to go and think about....why not spending more money on Education and have a "parents course" for all youngsters wanting to leave school after they've finished with GCSE's. It should be a one year course...compulsory....otherwise, they have to continue with A-levels. Too many young girls leave to have babies to get that support from the Government without having a clue how to raise a child properly. They are kids themselves having kids! I travelled by bus 2 days ago...something I do very rarely....and two young girls, about 16/17 got on with their children, each girl 2 kiddies, age about 8 months and 1 1/2 years.....the way they treated the children were really horrible...you can see they only got the kids to get the support not having the responsibility of a proper work, the same time they actually want their freedom and not the attachment of a child! Well, I guess it happens in other countries too, but I don't know of any other country that "pay" the young girls to get babies!!

Change!

Weather change....on the clock...15:10....and the first three pictures were taken...almost after the other which I posted earlier today! That was taken 10 to 3!

The next three pictures were taken at 19:45. Compare picture 3 with picture 4....and Heathrow is...quiet!!

1.7 Million SA's!!

Perhaps a good question....it is meant to be summer! This first picture was taken on the 21st of August! The others, today, at 10 min to 3! Asking myself....where is our summer....and the clouds are getting darker....it rained last night just after 12-ish...midnight....and in picture 3....you can see Heathrow still busy.....despite the weather....
Interesting...I heard....(from our friends) that at any given time, there are 1.7 million ....yes...MILLION....South Africans in the UK!! Numbers are the highest during August/September and the lowest during December...but...at any given time...!! and (if my memory hasn't gone lost)...at any given time...(again)...there are 350 000 South Africans in the M25! So, dear Government...let us start a few South African schools!! Like in Auckland...there are TWO South African schools in Auckland and there are some schools having Afrikaans as a subject!!! Wow!!

Tribute to Diana

Newsarticle from Yahoo

And another herealso on Yahoo.

This dress on this first picture was also my wedding dress! I gave this picture to a friend of mine and she did everything! We changed the neck-line, because I wanted it a bit different. I didn't wear a hat though! I can remember that Sunday when the news came about Diana's death! I sat in front of the TV, soaking up every bit of news coming in, while sobbing! She was a lovely person.

Piccadilly Circus at night...movie

At last! I tried three times to upload this movie and every time it was another 30 -40 minutes...or more...This was taken a couple of nights ago...the same night we had ribs at Garfunkel's! I'm still in the beginning of experimenting with my camera...so be aware, I'm no expert...but I think what I wanted to capture, looks great on here... and I was in a car...very disturbing...:)

River Thames

This was the second time we went on a trip on the River. From Westminster to Greenwich. This time we spent the time at Greenwich to have a snack and to shop around the Street Markets. We were surprised to find a stall that sells some nice Boerewors It is an English guy who sells sausages and meat from different countries and he's got a South African guy who supplies him with the South African "sausages"...which is called wors. He also sells biltongwhich, of course, we couldn't resist!

With our previous visit we visited the
Royal Observatory, but we were a bit late, but just in time to stand on the O-line (Greenwich Time-line) to take pictures! Before we visited the Observatory, we spent time at theCutty Sark

This station is just before Earl's Court! Think the Earl would like the name of that station! He and the Baron might like to travel together on the Piccadilly line from Heathrow! :))

Wales

On our way back from Aber, we planned our journey especially to go through this town! It is a town full of bookshops! Unbelievable! This first photo, is a bookshop in the open, but secondhand books....and they trust you to leave the money in that box! That was funny....

Aberystwyth

In 2004 we visited friends of us in Aber. Aber is short for Aberystwyth. Pieter and Leone came to the UK in 2002 and we met them in Sutton, where we used to live when we came the first time to the UK. Leone is an ex-teacher, retired, but an artist and she is just amazing. Some of her art works are to be seen in Embassies! They are two lovely friends and spent a lot of time showing us around in Aber and nearby places.

These pics are from a castle in Aber. Follow the weblink to read more. The dog was funny...we stopped to buy something on the A438 route and he was sitting, very patiently, in the van waiting for his master!

Aberystwyth is in West Wales.
