Today is the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the Soviet satellite which was the first man-made object to be sent into an Earth orbit. The successful launch was announced obliquely in a small news item on the front page of Pravda, but immediately became front page news around the world. Sputnik was a small silver-coloured ball 58cm (2 feet) in diameter, with four frond-like antennae and two radio transmitters.

As it is National Poetry day in the UK, I would like to post poems of my favourite poet, WC Williams....the theme for Poetry day is "Dreams"....enjoy "The Dream" by John Donne, as well as the two poems of William Carlos Williams!
The Dream by John Donne Dear love, for nothing less than thee Would I have broke this happy dream ; It was a theme For reason, much too strong for fantasy. Therefore thou waked'st me wisely ; yet My dream thou brokest not, but continued'st it. Thou art so true that thoughts of thee suffice To make dreams truths, and fables histories Enter these arms, for since thou thought'st it best, Not to dream all my dream, let's act the rest. As lightning, or a taper's light, Thine eyes, and not thy noise waked me ; Yet I thought thee—For thou lovest truth—an angel, at first sight ; But when I saw thou saw'st my heart, And knew'st my thoughts beyond an angel's art, When thou knew'st what I dreamt, when thou knew'st when Excess of joy would wake me, and camest then, I must confess, it could not choose but be Profane, to think thee any thing but thee. Coming and staying show'd thee, thee, But rising makes me doubt, that now Thou art not thou. That love is weak where fear's as strong as he ; 'Tis not all spirit, pure and brave, If mixture it of fear, shame, honour have ; Perchance as torches, which must ready be, Men light and put out, so thou deal'st with me ; Thou camest to kindle, go'st to come ; then I Will dream that hope again, but else would die. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Love Song
I lie here thinking of you: the stain of love is upon the world! Yellow, yellow, yellow it eats into the leaves, smears with saffron horned branched the lean heavily against a smooth purple sky! There is no light only a honey-thick stain that drips from leaf to leaf and limb to limb spoiling the colors of the whole world- you far off there under the wine-red selvage of the west! ~~~William Carlos Williams As the cat
As the cat climbed over the top of the jamcloset first the right forefoot carefully then the hind stepped down into the pit of the empty flowerpot ~~~William Carlos Williams Friendships come and Friendships go Like wave upon the sand Like day and night Like birds in flight Like snowflakes when they land But you and I are something else Our friendship's here to stay Like weeds and rocks and dirty socks It never goes away! A friend is a person to laugh and cry with, An inspiration, Someone who lends a helping hand, though friends may not be forever, And they may not end up together, the memories of a true friendship will last forever. A friend is not a shadow nor a servant But someone who hold a piece of a person in his heart. Someone who shares a smile, Someone who brightens up your day What makes a person a friend? Is by saying your Love will stay. Renee donna Bufete

I like to read magazines. It's always interesting to read the covers, even if you're not going to buy it, just to see what people are writing about. These covers are a few of my favourite magazines, but must add that I don't read Time magazine. I will read it if it's the only mag I have, e.g. on the flight to SA, my neighbour had one and I read it just to pass the time! What you see here, are mostly covers of South African magazines. I do like National Geographic, for their very interesting articles and glossy photographs, although I sometimes question their articles about countries, because I've read one about South Africa in one issue and it wasn't a very balanced written article, so I was asking myself, what about the other countries then!
I've ordered the dvdLive is Beautiful from Amazon as one chess player recommended it and said it is a good movie. He is an English player (and teacher) and has just met a South African teacher, and she's teaching at his school too.....and he's on cloud 9! I can't wait to hear the next bit of news when he makes his moves on the chess site!! hahaha...
So af en toe sal hy my 'n Afrikaanse woord vra as hy vir haar iets wil se....dis nogal pret...
Leipoldt, C. Louis, 1880-1947 Leipoldt is a South African poet, one of the BEST poets...he describes in this poem the month October. He says October is the most beautiful month...for South Africa, that's the truth of course if you look at my previous entry's photos!
C. LOUIS LEIPOLDT
Ek is nou in Oktober, die mooiste, mooiste maand, met elke dag so helder, so pragtig elke aand! Met elke dag so helder, so pragtig elke aand!
IT IS OCTOBER! and I can imagine....Pretoria...what you look like! Purple Jacarandas everywhere! You can't hide yourself! This is the time when students are busy preparing for end-of-year exams...and...when they fall in love! I can remember how the men would come and visit with a bit of a Jacaranda branch! And..how you would go for a walk, bare feet...just to step on those blossoms and get your feet purple! Dan sing ek saam met Laurika Rauch: Jakaranda Strate....roep my vanaand...ek luister na die liedjie op die wind en ek volg my hart waar hy gaan....Jakaranda Strate...Jakaranda Strate...Jakaranda Strate...roep my vanaand...ek luister na die liedjie op die wind en ek volg my hart waar hy gaan....

All five these cats are cats of a chess player, he lives in Florida(USA)...(there is a Florida in Johannesburg, SA too....only difference...Florida in Jo'burg is just a suburb and not a state!)This is what he says about his felines...- and they just turned up at his house....and he was kind enough to home them and to care for them.....-"Charlie likes to catch popcorn in the air. He is quite animated! Bud, who I think used to be a prize fighter, has mellowed a lot. He likes to cuddle with Bill or me. Bill, the ambassador, gets along with everybody. He has had cancer surgery and is living on borrowed time...and we appreciate every day we have him. Smokey was an abused Main Coon cat who was severely under weight. He keeps to himself as I think he would rather be outdoors hunting wildlife! Birdy was a stray who having been fed by me for several months finally accepted me and became a member of the family. His eye was injured while he was a stray and could not be saved...but he seems to get along quite well with the one. Hannah is the only outside feline in the family. She prefers to not be around other cats. She is tiny but very street smart. She has feline aids and asthma, but appears to being doing ok. In the evenings she stays in a separate building that has creature comforts including heat and air."
Very sweet of him! Wish more people would do that with pets!
Follow this link to the Cat Federation of South Africa and have a look at the competition you can enter in October! and...have a look at previous years' cat winners...
I want to post this recipe especially for one chess player....Earl... he said that he hasn't eaten crumpets and wants to know more...so..here's some work to catch-up on!...Earl! Ingredients: 350 g plain flour 1 level teaspoon salt 5ml baking powder 300 ml milk sunflower, oil for frying and greasing cooking rings or crumpet rings How to: Tip the flour into a bowl and stir in the salt and baking powder.Add the milk. (I usually like to add 1 egg too....it's up to you if you want!)Beat the mixture well for about 5 minutes with a wooden spoon. The mixtureshould be quite liquid and of a spoonable consistency.Grease the cooking or crumpet rings with sunflower oil and smear a lightcovering of oil over the base of a solid frying pan. Place the rings on the baseof the pan and heat. When hot, spoon in the batter to about half-fill the rings.Cook the mixture over a gentle to moderate heat for about 4-8 minutes. Removethe rings and turn the crumpets over. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until lightly golden. Serve the crumpets hot with melted butter+honey/syrup. Enjoy!
