Dr Hendrik French Verwoerd - South Africa's BEST Prime Minister we could ever have. But, unfortunately, he was killed by
Tsafendas, an assasinator in the 1960's. Dr Verwoerd is called the "father of Apartheid"...which is true for the world, but not true for South Africans, even for the black people of that time, he was a person they could look up to. They had respect for him. He was a true Christian, he wanted the black people to govern themselves, to have their own countries and to support them so that they have their "own" too. He banned TV from South Africa, because he knew that it would have a bad influence on the youth of South Africa.
He was born in Amsterdam and as a 2 year old came to South Africa. He was a beloved leader and the country and the people really MOURNED that day when he was killed. Tsafendas was sent to jail and classified as a State Presidents' prisoner.
Dr Verwoerd was seen as somebody who really LOVE the people of his country and he really cared about everybody. I grew up on our family farm and there were already labourers living there for ages and they used to speak about him with great respect, as if he was their father. It is just a pity that the world want to see what THEY want to, to criticize, to point fingers, just to cover their own inability to run their own countries in a better way. To focus away from their own problems - which of course included racism too!! - and get the focus on another country, so that they can carry on messing up in their own country while the focus is not on them anymore! Isn't that what people used to do? It's always so easy to find a problem with the person nearest to me, to highlight his/her problem to get the focus away from "me"...ain't it??
I can say, I do admire him for what he tried - HE WAS A GREAT LEADER!
I can't agree with you more. The future will tell how great a leader Dr. Verwoerd realy was. This country of ours is falling to pieces day by day on every level of existence. If leadership after his death on 6/9/66 (note the 666, like Mandela's 46664)is compared with Dr. Verwoerd's, it is like comparing sparrows with an eagle!

ReplyDeleteI totally disagree - if a true Christian - then all people are made the same under God - this is not the South Africa I grew up in - where the natives/black/coloureds etc. - were deemed an inferior specie in all - from the bus route to the restaurant table and school. HF Verwoed is largely to blame in promulgating a race bias that will never be settled. The afrikaans culture survives - but in the past they too were oppressed, by those who served a master - named the National Party - in any which way - unsolved murders, things that during school were uttered by teachers/principals . Universities that did not allow anyone else except of a white skin to get anywhere in life. PS. I am white, Italian by birth and spent over 23 years in SA

Deletehi FCR...tks for your comments...part of what you say is true...but i would like to disagree with you too...not ALL white South AFricans condemned blacks in SA...if you say that...you include me too...and I wish NOT to be included...thanks! I love the blacks i grew up with...you speak for a certain percentage of South Africans...and please take note...not ALL white SA's supported De Klerk and his...whatever you want to call them...or the National Party...why do you think the majority voted "yes" in the referendum in the 1990's? that "yes" was for a change!! what does that tell you? ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm quite impressed by your insight about Dr Verwoerd. I'm also from Italian descent, but unfortunately I cannot agree with fcr. If I'm not wrong, the ANC was formed in 1914, way back before Dr Verwoerd was even in politics, so to blame him for the one who where the architect of racial discrimination doesn't hold water. Jan Smuts was the one that started the "homelands". Well, as a "white" male person today in South Africa I know what discrimination is, and it's not from any "white" political party, maybe fcr should read some recent Labour Laws to fully appreciate the word discrimination. And sure enough, this country is now falling apart at the speed of "black light"

Only VERY sad to know what's going on with our beautiful country!! Maybe one day we will start a story.."one day, there WAS a beautiful country, called South Africa...and sadly..."...
